What is a Mahnung?

A Mahnung is a payment reminder or demand. It can come from a landlord, utility provider, mobile company, online shop, insurer or another business. The letter may include the original invoice amount plus reminder fees or other costs.

Check these details before paying

  • Your name and the contract or invoice reference.
  • The original invoice date and amount.
  • Whether you already paid and can prove it.
  • Any added fees and what they are for.
  • The new payment deadline.
  • The bank account and payment reference.
Do not confuse “Mahnung” with “Mahnbescheid”. A Mahnbescheid is part of a court payment-order procedure and needs more urgent attention. Court documents may arrive in an official-looking envelope and include formal instructions about how and when to respond.

If you think the claim is wrong

Do not ignore it. Compare the letter with your contract, invoices and bank statements. If the amount or claim is unclear, contact the sender in writing and keep copies. If the matter involves debt collection, a court notice or a significant disputed amount, consider Verbraucherzentrale, debt counselling or legal advice.

Why deadlines matter

Ignoring payment demands can lead to additional costs or escalation. At the same time, paying a claim you do not understand is not a good strategy either. The useful next step is to identify the exact claim, deadline and sender before deciding what to do.
