What is a Bescheid?

The Bundesagentur für Arbeit explains that a Jobcenter sends a written Bescheid as the decision on an application. It can approve a benefit, reject it, approve only part of it, change the amount or require repayment.

What to check on a Jobcenter letter

  • The period the decision covers.
  • The monthly amount and calculation.
  • Income, rent and household information used in the calculation.
  • Whether documents or information are requested.
  • Any repayment amount.
  • The section explaining how to challenge the decision.

If the calculation does not make sense

Compare the figures in the letter with the information you submitted. The Bundesagentur für Arbeit advises contacting the Jobcenter if you cannot understand the calculation. A conversation can clarify the decision, but it does not replace a formal objection if you need to challenge it.

Useful terms:
Bewilligungsbescheid = approval decision
Ablehnungsbescheid = rejection decision
Aufhebung = cancellation/revocation of a prior decision
Erstattung = repayment/reimbursement
Mitwirkung = duty to cooperate/provide information
Widerspruch = objection

Deadlines deserve special attention

If the letter is a formal decision, read the Rechtsbehelfsbelehrung at the end. It explains the route and deadline for challenging that specific decision. Do not rely on a generic internet deadline when your own letter states the applicable details.

Important: LifeAdmin can help you understand and organize paperwork, but it does not replace legal, tax, financial or medical advice. Verify deadlines, amounts and obligations in the original document and contact the sender or a qualified adviser when the consequences are important.
