Is it information, a request or a Bescheid?
A normal information letter may require no action. A request may ask you to send a form, proof of income or another document. A Bescheid is a formal decision—for example, whether a requested benefit is approved or rejected.
What to extract from the letter
- What subject or benefit the letter concerns.
- Whether your Krankenkasse needs documents from you.
- Any contribution amount or payment information.
- The date of the decision.
- Any deadline for replying or objecting.
- Contact details and your insurance/reference number.
If a benefit was rejected
The federal health portal gesund.bund.de explains that insured people can generally object to a health-insurance decision and that the instructions at the end of the decision explain the applicable route and deadline. Because the exact circumstances matter, always read the Rechtsbehelfsbelehrung in your own letter and verify the deadline there.
Bewilligung = approval
Ablehnung = rejection
Beitrag = contribution
Leistung = benefit/service
Widerspruch = objection
Rechtsbehelfsbelehrung = instructions for challenging a decision
When to contact the Krankenkasse
If you cannot understand a calculation, insurance-status change or medical-benefit decision, contact the insurer directly. For medical or legal disputes, consider appropriate professional advice. Keep the original letter and note the date you received it.
